TRIO History

Student Support Services was effectively founded in 1982 as part of the TRIO initiatives during the tenure of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The enactment of the Higher Education Amendments of 1968 added the Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, the third TRIO initiative which later came to be known as Student Support Services.

Who We Serve

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s TRIO Scholars Program is federally funded to serve 350 undergraduate students, who have over 150 majors to choose from. Participants receive free tutoring, counseling, success coaching, peer mentoring, and much more. Students may also enroll in smaller, personalized sections of foundational courses in math, science, English, leadership, and skills development.
