LPS High Schools

Access to higher education remains a challenge for many students who face barriers to college entry. Low-income students and students who are potentially the first in their family to attend college have lower college enrollment rates than other students.

These findings were part of the study carried out by the National Center for Education Statistics titled "The Condition of Education". Another research chaired by Dr. Tierney et al. titled "Helping Students Navigate the Path to College: What High Schools Can Do" for the Institute of Education Sciences identified two challenges for improving the college-going rate. First, students must be academically prepared for college by 12th grade. Second, in the study titled "Too Little Knowledge Is a Dangerous Thing: What the Public Thinks and Knows about Paying for College" carried out by Dr. Ikenberry et al. shows many students do not take the necessary steps during high school to prepare for and enter college, either because they are not aware of these steps or because they lack the guidance or support needed to complete them.

The lack of a college degree can be detrimental, as a recent analysis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics not only shows that the unemployment levels are lower for individuals with a baccalaureate degree, but also their pay is comparatively better.

The Office of TRIO programs' pre-college components - Educational Talent Search (ETS), Regular Upward Bound (RUB), and Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) - are aware of these challenges and are well prepared to address them effectively.

We serve eligible students with distinct interests from 3 high schools in the Lincoln community - Lincoln High, North Star, and Northeast - with the aim of helping them succeed in high school and gain admittance into a post-secondary institution.

You can learn more about the pre-college programs and their eligibility criteria from the main menu. You can write to ETS, RUB, and UBMS at ets@unl.edu, rub@unl.edu, and ubms@unl.edu respectively. Our phone number is 402-472-2027. We have listed our staff contacts for ETS, RUB, and UBMS, for each of the high schools we serve to address any questions you may have:
